Xmas in Wonderland-short story

I hope everyone is ready for Christmas. Here is the last one for the year. This is Xmas in wonderland! Hope you enjoy.
CHRISTMAS IN WONDERLAND
Short story
The entire wonderland forest was covered in a white blanket of sparkly snow. The air was crisp and it was Rabbit’s favorite time of the year or at least next to spring. He was busy in his whole making his list of what he would need for his own feast and getting his letter ready for Santa.
One of the best things was that so far he had heard nothing from the hatter about any festive celebrations with those creatures. He hadn’t even seen any of the faeries floating around. Not even the winter ones which he was very glad not to see. Those things were nasty.
But the thought barely was put behind him when he heard footsteps above him and by their lively steps, he knew who it was.
“My dear friend, you down there fluffy? I have some exciting news for you.”
Rabbit sighed. And here he thought…He climbed out of his hole and hatter stood tall before him dressed in this very colorful coat. Reds and greens that glittered and around his neck was a knitted scarf the color of greens and reds mixed together. His hat was decorated in pine cones and leaves. “Are you up for a party my fluffy?”
Rabbit shook his head no. Hatter frowned. “Now don’t be a grumpy pants. You have to come out and celebrate this wondrous time. Isn’t it the best? Gifts are exchanged and we eat good food and we dance.”
Rabbit cringed when he said dance. The wild ones liked nothing better than to dance and twirl around like the snowflakes. He was having no part of that.
“The party is the eve of Xmas and I will come pick you up and we shall attend the event of the year.”
That made Rabbit cringe even more. He knew that he would not take any refusal to go so all he did was give a sad nod.
“Turn that frown upside down my fluffy. It will be fun I promise.”
Then off he went like a gust of wind leaving Rabbit standing there holding his paper that he was going to write his letter on to Santa. He scampered down his hole and got to the letter. He had lots to say.
Dear Santa:
I hope you have had a good year and that it is not too cold in the North Pole. Hope Mrs. Santa is doing well and probably baking lots of cookies!
It will soon be Xmas and I do have some things I would like to ask for. Hatter just announced that there will be a party in the forest and is insistent that I come with him. Now you know how I feel about such things. And I’m not sure what you can do about this but maybe you can?
I would also like a new basket to gather my berries and such in. My other one is falling apart.
I thank you and wish you and Mrs. Santa a happy new year.
Cheers,
Rabbit

He sealed it up and put Santa on the envelope and went out his hole. There was now a strong north wind. That would be perfect. He hopped over to a small knoll and held up the letter. It was like the wind had hands and snapped it out of his paw and off into the wind it went. Rabbit watched it go up up up and disappeared.
He shook himself as he looked around. There was a storm coming. Rabbit got back to his hole and got out of the stormy weather. As it turned out, it got quite blustery in the forest. For most of the night it howled.
The next morning when Rabbit got up, ho noticed a small pile of snow on his floor. That meant it had snowed a lot when that happened. He set to getting his little shovel and pushing it back out. He got quite a surprise when he got to the surface. The snow had buried everything. The sun was out and the snow sparkled and glittered everywhere.
Tonight was the party. Rabbit smiled to himself. With this much snow, they would not be able to have their party. Santa had got his letter!
But then he frowned. “How will Santa make it out tonight,” he said out loud. Oh dear what had he done? He paced back and forth and then he heard his name.
“Are you alright Rabbit?”
It was another woodland rabbit, Hermy. He came scampering over the snow to Rabbit. He was all bundled up. A large brown scarf and two long ear mitts covered his head. “Hello Hermy. I’m fine but with all this snow, how is Santa going to come tonight?”
“He will make it Rabbit. He always does.”
“I hope you are right but I’m still worried.”
“Are you going to the festivities tonight?”
“Are they still having it?”
“Oh yes, they won’t let this snow stop them from celebrating Xmas eve.”
“Oh I ‘m not sure I want to venture out.”
Hermy made a little noise through his scarf. “That old hatter will come for you. Might as well come at least for a while and a present. That’s what I look for and those candied nuts that the faeries make.”
It was getting close to twilight now and Rabbit knew that the hatter would be coming soon. So, he bundled up. Slipped on his ear socks and scarf. And just in time as he heard the bells above. He knew that was Hatter.
He jingled at his hole. “Ready Rabbit?”
Rabbit came up and there was a deer faerie with bells on her head. Hatter picked Rabbit up and placed him on the back of the deer. They started for the forest.
Rabbit got quite a surprise when they got there. The trees were all lit up with faerie orbs. The place looked magical. The long table was even dug out of the snow and decorated with rose hips and nuts and small fairies flitted about. Tiny plates with acorn cups were neatly lined up along the table.
The food was overflowing in the middle. Rabbit suddenly decided that he would enjoy the meal if nothing else. Hatter sat Rabbit down next to his seat and Hermy was there with some other bush rabbits. They all enjoyed their meal and the music filled the forest air. Rabbit rather enjoyed himself. They just all finished eating when the wind got up and it started to snow again. In fact it was snowing quite hard. The little faeries flew off for cover to their nests.
Hatter knew Rabbit would want to get going as well. He placed him and Hermy with a few other bush bunnies and took them all home. Then it was just rabbit. The deer faerie found her way to his hole but by then it was really starting to storm.
“Take care Rabbit, I will see you in the morning. Oh and here is a little gift for you.”
Rabbit thanked him and scampered down to his home, covering his hole with some bows to keep the snow from coming in too far.
He placed his little gift under his small tree and noticed something. There was something wrapped in some cloth with a bow and note attached.
He opened the note. Dear Rabbit:
Thank you Rabbit for your letter. I hope you enjoyed your festivities tonight. I trust you had a good time. I knew you would. Sometimes being with your friends can be most enjoyable. I know you don’t like big parties so I hope this calmer version was agreeable.
Mrs. Santa had made lots of cookies. Look inside your gift. Merry Christmas my fluffy friend.
Rabbit opened the gift and there was a brand new basket with a little package. He opened the package and inside was cookies made by Mrs. Santa! He nibbled on one with some warm milk.
He decided he would save Hatter’s gift for the morning. He had some gifts for Hermy and the other bush bunnies as well. They would spend it together. Tonight was very good he thought. He took his cookie to his bed and snuggled down and was all warm and toasty.
Rabbit sighed. “Merry Christmas from Wonderland!!

IN THE SPIRIT-CAT FLASH FICTION

Hello, hope it is warm where you are. It's a cold night here for sure. But it is that time of year. So we are starting off the Xmas season with some Xmas cat flash fiction. Hope you enjoy!

IN THE SPIRIT

CAT FLASH FICTION

It was getting close the night before Xmas and everything was set for the big day.

Angel was also waiting for the big day. She knew which present was hers. She could smell it and there was also something in there for her to play with.

But one thing caught her eye on the big tree. Angel wasn’t sure if it was for her or not but she thought it looked like something for a cat.

Angel circled the tree a few times and her owner Maggie teased her about it. “Do you think that is for you?”

Angel wasn’t sure but the way Maggie spoke, it must be. She kept an eye on it anyway.

The other feline in the family Max found another package that looked the same as the one Angel found.

Max kept an eye out for that package as well. It would only a matter of time and they would know.

Maggie had snuggled the two of them down in their big soft cat basket and shut out the lights. The Xmas tree was lit up but always shut off before midnight on the timer.

Max and Angel settled in and the next time Angel woke, everything was in darkness but she could make out things in the dark with her good cat eyes.

She thought she could hear a scratch at the front door where there cat door was. Angel got up and went over to the door. Their cat door was shut so she couldn’t get out.

Then she heard a mew. She mewed back and then the scratching go louder. By this time Max came out as he heard the noise too.

Max sniffed and looked at Angel. “It’s another cat.”

“He sounds like he needs help.”

“Let’s open our door, we can try together.”

So, the two of them pushed with their noses and surprising it slipped up and onto the floor. A nose stuck in and then a head. It was a kitten! He bounced in and shook himself. “It’s cold out there and I had no place to go.”

Angel and Max looked at one another. “Well, come on in and warm up. You stay here tonight.”

“Thanks, but have you got anything to eat.”

Max nodded. “Yeah, come follow me to the kitchen. Maggie always puts out a snack for us.”

The kitten bolted for the food and ate really fast. Max gave a look to Angel. “You don’t have a home?”

“Nope, I’m all alone. My momma got taken away and so did my sister but they never got me.”

“I see,” said Max. “It’s pretty cold for a little guy out there.”

The kitten washed a paw. “Thanks for letting me stay here tonight.”

“We have a big basket,” said Angel. “Come, and we will get you warmed up by the fire.”

All three of them settled in to the basket. The kitten soon fell asleep.

Max whispered. “I’m sure Maggie will know what to do.”

Angel nodded and they soon fell back to sleep too.

Maggie came into the room the next morning. “Well, Merry Xmas you two. Look what I found in the kitchen.”

She was holding the kitten. “I see you guys helped out this poor little guy last night. That was kind of you. He has no home by the looks of it. What you say? He lives with us?”

Angel and Max meowed and Maggie grinned. “I thought you guys would approve.”

“I named him already too. His name is Frosty. His paws are white and he has a white patch on his tabby head. And since he arrived on a frosty night, it feels like a good name. Frosty purred and she let him down and joined the other two.

“Now it’s time for you guys to have your gifts.”

Angel and Max got very excited. She reached and took the two packages that they had been keeping an eye out on. She opened them and in each one was two new cat nip toys. They were quite happy. Frosty looked on with excitement.

Both Angel and Max pushed over a toy each over to Frosty. Frosty mewed.

“Aww, that so nice of you two to share your new cat nip toys.”

Frosty payed with his two new toys all morning and played himself out. He dragged over on that was a fish with a feather on it over to the basket. He stretched out in the basket in front of the fireplace and fell asleep.

Max and Angel looked on. Mas yawned. “I think he has the right idea.”

Angel thought so too. “Merry Xmas Max.”

“Merry Xmas Angel and they both looked over at Frosty. Together they said “Merry Xmas Frosty.”

SUNSET PICNIC-FLASH FICTION

Hi everyone! Even though the ground is white, I felt like summer when I seen this pic. Hope you enjoy!

SUNSET PICNIC
FLASH FICTION

We decided to have an evening picnic just as the sun was about to set. It was a beautiful evening and it was that time of late summer when the sweet smell of summer was turning to fall.
My friend found an old blanket to lay on and we decided on almond butter and honey sandwiches and apple pie that we had made from the apples we picked in the orchard. We didn’t even burn it.
So we packed up our treats along with some apple juice. We found some chipped mugs to drink out of.
As we took the old cow path, the crickets were singing and the bull frogs were chatting. We sang our own tune.
As the sun was setting everything turned to colors of pinks and yellows and the grasses even shared in the color. We sat with sticky fingers holding our mugs of juice. No one thought to bring a damp cloth so we licked our fingers and wiped them in the grass that was forming dew.
The sun now was almost hid from us. Like someone blowing out a candle it would be gone in a wink. We decided that we should head back before it got too dark.
We sang with the bullfrogs and guessed what the crickets were saying in their secret code. We were convinced that knew everything about us. Maybe more than we did, but then we were young and we thought we would just figure it out one day.

WHO I MET AT THE CLOTHES LINE-FLASH FICTION

Hello everyone and today we have a little something for those who like clothes lines. I use them. Hope you enjoy!

Who I met at the Clothesline

Flash fiction

It was a cool autumn evening and the sun was starting to set. I needed to go out to the clothesline and get the blankets down. When the darkness started to creep in, I always let my imagination run wild.

Why I did that I don’t know. There was never anything there. It was just the evening coming to a close and getting darker at that time of year. This time however, I wasn’t thinking about it and as I was pulling in the clothesline, it made that squealing noise that seemed to echo into the darkness. It was the last blanket that I was pulling in when it stopped. I couldn’t pull it in. There was something holding it back. I figured it got snagged on the something. It sometimes happened.

But before I got down the steps to investigate, I seen a slim dark figure. I almost screamed but when he smiled, I just froze instead. There was something about him that told me he was not human. He was holding onto the blanket. His fingers were so long but very clean. His face was smooth and his eyes were as sharp as my cats.

He let go of the blanket and swayed for a bit. Stepping out of its way, he stands by the steps of the clothesline stand. I’m wondering if he is scared of me. I was scared of him.

Leaning against the stand, he sniffs the blankets in the basket. His nose twitches.

Suddenly his cat eyes, as gold as the sunset. Flashes at me. I hold my breath. His straight golden brown autumn mixed hair falls across his cheek he grins at me. I was waiting for him to say something. What would he sound like? Would he know English? That was so silly.

He makes a small sound and hops up on the stand as quick as cat and pulls in the last blanket and lays it neatly on top of the others. He breathes in the fresh autumn air and leaps down.

With a wink he saunters off into the bush. It is getting very dark now. I clutch my chest for moment and then go and quickly pick up the basket of blankets. I quickly got inside the house where I felt safe.

As I was putting away the blankets, tucked inside was a large dried oak leaf. It was the color of red and gold. I twirled it around with my fingers. I sighed. I wondered if I would see him again.

I tucked the oak leaf inside my journal.

MANX-SHORT STORY

Hello and today I have a cat story for you. Hope you enjoy! And if you would like to support this story, you can down at the bottom. Thank you!

Manx
Flash fiction

He could see over the horizon where the sun was starting to set. The heat of the day would be cooling off. Then he could head out and hunt.
The only thing was that the night brought out other hunters as well and they could be a threat to him.
Foxy boy was always on the prowl but never really a threat. Manx knew his routine pretty good. Grey horn always announced his arrival with this hoots.  Usually calling over more owls which was the signal to clear out.
Tonight he was going to fallow a certain other cat who was new to the region. There was no threat from this cat but she looked interesting and wanted to talk to her. Maybe they could hunt together.
He threw up his nose and sniffed the air to see what caught in his senses. So far so good.
The moon was now high and the silver light lit up the path he was on. Dark shadows danced along the trees beside him. He was sure eyes were following him.
He kept his guard up as he never knew who he might encounter.
Finally he made his way into clearing where a small creak gurgled away. His chest jumped to life as he saw her across the way drinking.
He decided to do the same thing. He kept one eye on her while he drank, hoping that she would look up.
She never did but then as she turned she caught his scent. Now she looked his way.
He nodded to her and she swiftly turned and trotted back into the forest disappearing into the dark.
His ears drooped. Foxy boy came not too far away, and was having a drink. While he drank, Foxy boy kept his one eye on him.
“What’s wrong,” he asked. “Something chase you?”
“No, I was here to see another cat and hopefully meet them.”
“The one that just left. I would stay away from her. She is one of them.”
“Them?”
“The magical ones, I’m sure you have heard of them.”
“Yeah, I have but never saw any so I’m not so sure they exist.”
“Oh they do, and right now they are prowling our woods.”
“What are they prowling for?”
“Who knows but I am staying away and so should you.” He trotted off leaving him with his warning.
Manx shook his head. She didn’t look like a threat. She looked friendly and if he ever saw her near, he would speak to her.
He went back down the path and took another path that would take him to the other side of the creak and maybe he would see her.
And he got his wish. She was stretched out on a small hill overlooking the meadow. The moon bathed her white grey muted fur. Her ear tufts reached out to the night sky. He carefully approached.
Suddenly she leaped up and whirled around in the air and land on all fours teeth baring.
His ears went flat. “I’m not here to threaten you.”
He could see her smell him and then stand up and look at him “Who are you?”
“Manx, I live here. And I just noticed you and wanted to say hi.”
“Oh, well, hi back.”
“Can we sit together?”
She nodded and he carefully trotted up beside her and sat down and looked over the meadow.
“Where you watching for something to hunt?”
“Not really. But if I saw anything, I would go.”
“Yeah, I thought so. Do you like it here?” He felt like he was asking dumb questions.
It did make her smile.
“Would you like to hunt with me tonight?”
His ears perked up. “Sure, sound good.”
She shook her head and stood up. Let me take you to a special place and you will see all about me.”
Manx remembered what Foxy boy said. “Are you magical?”
Her eyes went wide. “Me? I don’t have any magic.”
“Okay, let’s go hunt first and then maybe we can go to your special place.”
Off they went down into the meadow where they caught some mice and headed to the creak.
They both drank. Now she was going to go show him her special place.
It was close to the meadow where he met her. She leaped into the tall grass and rolled around. He did the same. The grass felt cool and smooth.
When she got back up on her fours, she looked at him. “Come.”
He followed her and she came to a large oak tree with an opening in it. She went inside and turned for him to follow.
He got close and sniffed the opening. The hair stood up on the back of his neck. Manx backed up and he whirled around running as fast as his feet would carry him.
When he reached the top of the hill looking down on the forest. There was soft glow coming from the area he had just ran from.
He was panting. Foxy boy was right. She was magic and her hunting was for ones like him. He shook his head. Never again would he pursue her.
Manx did see her after that but he kept hidden from her.
Another one came up beside her. He knew to stay away from the magical ones.
He left the area for a while until he heard it was safe to come back.

HALLOWEEN IN WONDERLAND-short story

Since I am posting this Wednesday evening, Halloween, I have a treat for you. It's Halloween in wonderland and there is a party going on. Wanna come? Enjoy the story!

HALLOWEEN IN WONDERLAND

It was getting close to the special night when the spooks and goblins came venturing out but it wasn’t what Rabbit feared as much as them. On nights like this it brought out all kinds of them. And it was already starting with the invitation that he was holding in his paw.
The mad hatter had personally delivered it to his hole and dropped it down landing in his salad. When he plucked off the radish that was stuck to it, he knew what it was. He shivered as he opened it. As he read the details, he gasped. He was bringing her. He got up and paced, wringing his paws together, mushing up the invitation, in hopes of coming up with an excuse that would be accepted. He could not go.
“Why does he always want to bring her to these parties? She always looks at me like she hasn’t eaten in days. No, I will not go to this party with her there. That’s final.”
Now it was the day before and he still had not come up with a believable excuse. Hatter would be coming to confirm him to coming. Maybe if he hid?
The ground above shook. He knew it was Hatter. Rabbit ran and crawled under his bed. “Rabbit, are you down there, my little friend? Come out my fluffy eared fellow. I have someone here with me. They would love to see you.”
Rabbit covered his mouth with his paw. She was here already! He stayed quiet and prayed they would leave. After a bit he could hear a sigh. “Maybe he is gathering some greens. Let’s go to his favourite patch.”
Rabbit waited for a bit to make sure they were really gone. Then he slowly crawled out from underneath.  He let out an exasperated sigh. “What am I going to do?”
He grabbed his small little basket and decided to go pick some berries which was in the opposite direction of the place he picked his favorite greens. He first poked his nose out and sniffed. Nothing so he came out and headed toward the berry patch. He was halfway down the path when he heard voices behind him. He froze. The voices were not the Hatters. The way they giggled it sounded like sprites. They were always up to no good and just as he was going to make haste another voice joined them. This time it was the Hatter. He rushed off now. Rabbit could take the long way around and get back to his hole.
But of course, he was spotted when he heard his name. “Rabbit, there you are. I’ve been looking for you.”
Rabbit didn’t even turn around, he could hear his fast paced footsteps coming towards him. Soon Hatter was standing in front of him looking down at him beaming. “Aren’t you excited about the party?” He waved his hand in the air like he was about to conduct an orchestra. “And I have someone special that is coming to the party.” He looked over Rabbit’s head. “Come dear and see our dear friend. Rabbit cringed as he heard that all too shrilly laugh. His nose twitched at her over powering rose perfume.
She came rushing up beside Hatter looking down at him with her bright pink lipstick lips. Her teeth shone and looked sharp to rabbit. He backed up a bit. Her long pointy fingernails were painted hot pink as well. She held out her hand to rabbit. “So lovely to see you. When I heard about the party, I came right away as I knew you would be there.”
Rabbit swallowed hard and let out a nervous laugh. “Well…” said rabbit. “I…”
“Oh come on my fluffy friend. Don’t stammer. Get the words out before they run away,” laughed Hatter.
Rabbit had forgot about the sprites who now were joining them. Their wide eyes resembled glassy marbles. Pale green skin freckled with brown spots on their shoulders and arms led to hands that sported sharp claws. They smiled at Rabbit but he knew that they were only faking it. They were both nuts and liked trouble for their main entertainment. Well he was not going to hang around be their amusement for the day.
He threw up his furry chin at them all. “I have things to do, I must go.”
He hopped around them listening to the giggling sprites that sounded like their nails on a chalkboard. His ears quivered. “See you later,” she said.
He mumbled under his breath. “Not if I can help it.”
Rabbit gripped his little basket so tight that he went right by his berry patch and when he realized that, he sighed. “I’m not going back there. It will be salad for supper.” He hurried back to his home before he met up with them again.
Back in his hole, he cleaned up and got ready for his meal when he could hear the sound of someone coming towards his hole. He held his breath for a moment. “Rabbit, are down there? I need to have a word with you. It won’t take long.”
It was Hatter. Rabbit let out a breath and went up to see what he wanted. All he hoped was that she wasn’t with him. With relief, she wasn’t. He smiled down at him and presented him with a basket of berries. Rabbit eyes went wide.
“I knew you would be too worked up to pick, so I picked for you. Of course I hope I can convince you to come to the party. It will be great rabbit-only of you just make an appearance.”
Rabbit eyed him carefully. “Make an appearance? That’s all I have to do?”
Hatter nodded.
Rabbit looked one way and then the other. “I…suppose…”
“Good, I take that as a yes. I will come and escort you to the event.”
“Oh you don’t have to do that…”
“No, I insist, I want you to arrive without incident. I know those sprites and such like to play games.”
Rabbit’s ears fell a bit. “Okay.”
“Wonderful.” And off he bounced leaving Rabbit with his berries.
The day had come and within hours Hatter would be arriving to pick him up. He paced back and forth wiring his paws. He knew that she would be with him.
“Rabbit, are you ready?”
He listened for a moment but could not hear her. Slowly he went up and saw Hatter by himself in all his glory, dressed in a bright orange coat that swept the ground and his shirt was bright green. Rabbit could see his outfit shimmer like the makeup around his eyes.
“Good evening Rabbit. Happy Hallows eve.”
Rabbit nodded. “Same to you.”
“Don’t be so glum rabbit. You wait and see.”
The Hatter escorted Rabbit to a waiting carriage. Silver foxes waited to pull the orange pumpkin shaped carriage to their party. Rabbit gasped. Fire flies lit the way. The Hatter helped him up and off they went. The trees were lit up with lights and the old table was brimming with goodies. The guests were there in all their elaborate costumes. Faeries wearing masks of leaves of every color of the forest adorned their faces. Their cat like eyes glowed in the light when it hit them giving them a mischievous look.
Rabbit felt like he was being stared at as the silver foxes that brought them rushed past them and suddenly started playing on the table scattering nuts everywhere. The masked faeries got in on the game. The chaos had started.
Of course there were other rabbits there and they were nibbling on carrots and clover enjoying themselves and ignoring the rest. Rabbit wanted to do that as well. But not to be of course as she came waltzing up to them. “Oh, your here.” The shimmering lights reflected in her gold eyes that peered down at him through a mask that covered almost her entire face. It was mostly made of feathers.
“Dance with me rabbit.”
Before he could decline, she grabbed his little paw and led him to where all the others were dancing. He shivered as he looked up into the faces. Some had flowing dress wear that looked like spider’s silk. Wild flowers decorated their colored hair over their painted faced. The feathered and leaf masks were a favorite. Rabbit stayed close to her. He didn’t want to get touched by one them.
The music filled the air and they were all drinking out of little cups. Rabbit knew the cups were filled with honey wine and honeysuckle wine. They would all be quite happy in a hour or two. He would leave before then-for sure.
Rabbit just hid in the grass as she danced around him. He kept looking for Hatter but he appeared to have been swallowed up by all the guests. Horned creatures and woodland elves all enjoyed the food and drink. Their laughs sounded like wolves howling on an eerie night.
Finally Hatter was headed their way and Rabbit knew by the look on his face that he was maybe going to rescue him. Oh he hoped so.
“Well, how are we doing?”
Before she could answer, one of those horned creatures came up at the same time and grabbed her and they danced off. That left Rabbit and Hatter. He smiled down at Rabbit. “Ready to go?”
Rabbit nodded quickly. “I thought so. Come with me my friend.”
Rabbit was a bit worried what he had planned. Nothing was ordinary with Hatter. The carriage was waiting for him again and this time, deer were going to pull the carriage. They looked friendlier than the silver foxes. Hatter helped him up and sat beside him. Off they went.
The carriage was not heading toward where Rabbit lived. “Where are we going?”
“Don’t worry Rabbit. I have something special for you.”
Now Rabbit was worried. He looked around as the bare leaved trees looked like fingers ready to pluck him out of the carriage. The moon was full tonight and in the forest the mist was creeping in. Rabbit was imagining all kinds of things that were hiding in the mist ready to grab him. He was ready to hide under the seat when they stopped.
Hatter jumped up and held out his hand. Rabbit was scared of taking his hand and shook his head. “Trust me Rabbit, it will be great.”
Finally he took Hatter’s hand and they went to a small opening in the forest not far from the carriage. Rabbit kept his eyes open for goblins ready to eat him. The moon’s light lit up something. Rabbit couldn’t make it out.
“Here is your surprise my friend. I know you will like these.”
Rabbit looked a little closer and his eyes went wide. “There were magic mushrooms. These ones only grew at certain times of the year and then sometimes there were not very many. Tonight, there was an abundance of the little mushrooms. Rabbit couldn’t believe it.
“Happy Halloween Rabbit.”
“Why thank you Hatter.”
“Let’s go gather you up some, shall we?”
Now they were heading back to his hole. Sitting in his lap was a basket full of magic mushrooms. He couldn’t believe that he would be having some of these for his breakfast. Hatter helped him down and before he went down his hole, Hatter had another little gift. “Here is a little treat for you.” He handed Rabbit a carrot muffin.
Rabbit smiled. “My favorite, thank you so much.”
“You’re quite welcome my friend. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”
Rabbit went down his hole with all his goodies. He could hear Hatter go off with the carriage. Now all that he could see was the soft moon’s light shining down his hole. He yawned.
He took his basket of magic mushrooms and placed them in his little pantry, next to his berries that Hatter had given him. He smiled to himself.  Today wasn’t so bad after all.
He snuggled down in his bed and mumbled. “Happy Halloween Hatter.”
