SUNSET PICNIC
FLASH FICTION
We decided to have an
evening picnic just as the sun was about to set. It was a beautiful evening and
it was that time of late summer when the sweet smell of summer was turning to fall.
My friend found an old
blanket to lay on and we decided on almond butter and honey sandwiches and
apple pie that we had made from the apples we picked in the orchard. We didn’t
even burn it.
So we packed up our
treats along with some apple juice. We found some chipped mugs to drink out of.
As we took the old cow
path, the crickets were singing and the bull frogs were chatting. We sang our
own tune.
As the sun was setting
everything turned to colors of pinks and yellows and the grasses even shared in
the color. We sat with sticky fingers holding our mugs of juice. No one thought
to bring a damp cloth so we licked our fingers and wiped them in the grass that
was forming dew.
The sun now was almost
hid from us. Like someone blowing out a candle it would be gone in a wink. We
decided that we should head back before it got too dark.
We sang with the bullfrogs
and guessed what the crickets were saying in their secret code. We were
convinced that knew everything about us. Maybe more than we did, but then we
were young and we thought we would just figure it out one day.
